Biography

Lee Michelle first became widely known in South Korea through the first season of SBS’s audition program K-pop Star, which aired from 2011 to 2012. Her strong, soulful singing style helped her become one of the show’s memorable contestants.

Following K-pop Star, she joined YG Entertainment and trained as part of the planned girl group SuPearls. The group was expected to debut under YG, but its debut plans were ultimately cancelled and the project was discontinued before an official group debut. Michelle subsequently signed with DIMA Entertainment, an affiliate associated with her alma mater, and moved toward a solo career.

Her official solo debut came on March 21, 2014 with the single Without You. The song became an important introduction to her identity as a solo artist. Its music video and lyrical themes addressed emotional pain, self-worth and prejudice, reflecting aspects of experiences she has discussed publicly.

Michelle continued developing her sound through the mini album I Can Sing (2015), later the mini album Day By Day (2020), a series of digital singles and collaborations, television appearances, OST recordings, and Christian music projects. Her 2026 full-length album Bliss marked her first full studio album and presented a more faith-centered body of work.

Early Life & Musical Background

Michelle was born in Paju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, on September 9, 1991. Published biographies describe her as having a Korean mother and an African-American father. She grew up in Korea and has spoken publicly about experiences of discrimination connected to her mixed heritage.

She has described music as part of her childhood environment, including listening to Korean pop and American R&B with her family. Her vocal influences and performance style eventually developed into a combination of strong Korean pop vocals, soul, R&B and later hip-hop influences.

Michelle studied at the Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts, where she was also involved in worship and music activities. She has discussed songwriting, arranging, singing, rapping and music education as parts of her broader musical interests.

K-pop Star & SuPearls

Michelle auditioned for and competed on the first season of K-pop Star. During the competition she performed several songs that were released through the show’s soundtrack/compilation releases, including “One Night Only,” “Looking at the Photo,” “If I Were a Boy” and “U – JUST.”

After the program, YG Entertainment recruited her for a planned girl group called SuPearls. The group was associated with other K-pop Star contestants and received considerable attention before its debut. Michelle trained at YG for approximately two years, but YG eventually abandoned the planned debut and her contract was nullified. SuPearls therefore never made an official commercial debut.
