Where Are They Now

Where Are They Now? – Lim Kim

In 2011, South Korea fell in love with the ethereal, smoky vocals of Kim Ye-rim when she competed alongside bandmate Do Dae-yoon as the indie-folk duo Togeworl on Superstar K3. Placing third, the duo signed with Mystic89, paving the way for her highly successful 2013 solo debut under the moniker Lim Kim. Early chart-topping hits like “All Right” and “Awoo” established her as K-pop’s ultimate indie-pop darling. However, in 2016, she walked away from her agency and went completely radio silent, leaving fans to wonder if one of Korea’s most distinct voices had left the music industry for good. More than a decade after her debut, Lim Kim has pulled off one of the most radical reinventions in Korean music history, evolving from a curated soloist into an award-winning independent mastermind and global icon.

After a grueling three-year hiatus, Lim Kim shocked the music world in 2019 by independently crowdsourcing her comeback EP, Generasian. Dropping her soft pop persona, she re-emerged as a bold, experimental hip-hop and electronic artist under her self-established label. Tracks like “Yellow” pushed heavy themes of Asian identity, feminism, and anti-stereotypes, completely redefining her brand. The critical gamble paid off massively; she walked away with two trophies at the 17th Korean Music Awards, winning Best Dance & Electronic Song and Best Dance & Electronic Album. Her fierce sound found a new wave of mainstream popularity when her tracks “Yellow” and “Yo-Soul” were selected as high-stakes mission songs on Mnet’s hit dance survival show, Street Woman Fighter, featuring viral choreography by 1Million Dance Studio.

Lim Kim’s massive cultural influence across music and fashion quickly caught global eyes, leading to an incredibly active period of high-profile collaborations. She lent her distinct vocals to the global smash hit drama King the Land (2023), recording the track “Confess To You.” Even while remaining independent, she treated long-time fans to her high-energy 2024 single “Ult,” which reunited her with 1Million Dance Studio for an unforgettable, bass-heavy visual performance. Her career momentum reached a new peak in 2025. Early that year, she released her collaborative single “Choya” (First Night) with legendary Korean rocker Kim Chang-wan. Soon after, she signed on as a major brand ambassador for luxury cosmetics giant Hera (2025). In August 2025, she officially signed an exclusive deal with Universal Music Korea. Joining a prestigious roster alongside hip-hop and R&B heavyweights like Dean and Okasian, the global music giant is actively leveraging her genre-defying sound to supercharge her international footprint. She capped off her massive year by recording “Run & Run” for the psychological thriller series Dear X. (2025).

While a full-time Togeworl revival remains up in the air as Do Dae-yoon pursues independent projects, Lim Kim has proven that a K-pop artist can successfully break free from the traditional idol mold. She continues to release music on her own terms, cementing her legacy as a true pioneer of the modern Korean alt-pop movement.
